What is the HPV vaccine?

Gardasil 9 is the most comprehensive HPV vaccine available. It covers nine types of human papillomavirus: the seven high-risk types behind about 90% of cervical cancers, which can also cause cancers of the oropharynx (throat), vagina, vulva, penis and anus, and types 6 and 11, which cause most genital warts. The UK follows a single-dose schedule for those under 25, in line with evidence that one dose generates a strong and lasting immune response. Adults aged 25 to 45 have two doses, 6 to 24 months apart. People who are immunosuppressed or living with HIV have three doses. Vaccination remains beneficial up to age 45 even after prior HPV exposure, as most people will not have encountered all nine strains.

Recommended for…

Anyone aged 9–45 - especially recommended for adolescents before sexual activity, but valuable at any age.

✓

Adolescents - maximum benefit

Vaccination before sexual debut provides the highest level of protection - ideally at age 11–13 for boys and girls.

✓

Adults up to 45

HPV vaccination remains beneficial in adults. Even those with prior exposure are unlikely to have been infected with all 9 strains.

Frequently asked questions

How many doses does Gardasil 9 require?
Under current UK guidance (UKHSA Green Book), a single dose is sufficient for anyone under 25. Those aged 25 to 45 have two doses, 6 to 24 months apart. People who are immunosuppressed or living with HIV have three doses, at 0, 1 and 4 to 6 months.
Does HPV vaccination help if I'm already sexually active?
Yes - most sexually active adults will not have been exposed to all 9 strains covered by Gardasil 9. Vaccination is still beneficial up to age 45.
Does the HPV vaccine protect against all cervical cancers?
Gardasil 9 covers the strains responsible for ~90% of cervical cancers. Regular cervical screening (smear tests) remains important alongside vaccination.
Are there side effects?
Most common: mild arm soreness and redness. Rarely, brief fainting immediately after injection - you will be observed for 15 minutes post-vaccination.
