JOINT & SOFT-TISSUE CARE

Targeted relief for knee
and shoulder pain.

Steroid joint injections can ease the pain, swelling and stiffness of osteoarthritis and tendinitis when rest, pain relief and physiotherapy have not been enough. We assess you properly first and only proceed if an injection is right for you.

We take the time to confirm what's causing your pain before recommending treatment, so an injection is only used when it can genuinely help.

What are steroid joint injections?

A steroid joint injection delivers a small dose of corticosteroid - a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine - directly into or around an affected joint. By calming the inflammation that drives your symptoms, it can reduce pain, swelling and stiffness, often within a few days. At HHCC we provide steroid injections for the knee and shoulder, two of the joints most commonly affected by osteoarthritis and tendinitis.

Relief typically lasts from a few weeks to a few months and varies from person to person. An injection eases symptoms rather than curing the underlying problem, so it works best as part of a wider plan - staying active, managing weight where relevant, and progressing with physiotherapy. For many patients it offers a valuable, less invasive window of comfort and can help delay or avoid surgery.

Conditions a steroid injection can help

🦵

Knee osteoarthritis

Wear-and-tear arthritis of the knee causing pain, swelling and stiffness that limits walking and stairs.

💪

Shoulder osteoarthritis

Arthritis of the shoulder that restricts movement, affects everyday tasks and disturbs sleep.

🔥

Tendinitis

Inflamed or irritated tendons around the knee or shoulder, including rotator cuff problems.

🩹

A non-surgical option

A less invasive step worth considering when rest, pain relief and physiotherapy have not given enough relief.

A considered pathway, not a quick fix

This is not a directly bookable, walk-in treatment. Because an injection is only right for some people, every patient is seen for a consultation first and, where needed, has imaging to confirm the diagnosis before we proceed.

1

Consultation & examination

A doctor takes your history, examines the joint, and discusses your symptoms, goals and the options open to you.

2

Diagnostics to confirm

Where needed, we arrange an X-ray or ultrasound scan to confirm osteoarthritis or tendinitis and rule out other causes.

3

Steroid injection

If an injection is suitable and you wish to go ahead, it is carried out cleanly and carefully, sometimes guided by ultrasound for accuracy.

4

Aftercare & review

We explain what to expect afterwards and review your progress, alongside physiotherapy or other treatment where helpful.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a steroid injection directly?
No. This is a consultation-led service. You will be assessed by a doctor first and usually need an X-ray or ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis before an injection is offered. This makes sure the treatment is safe and right for you.
Which joints do you inject?
We provide steroid injections for the knee and shoulder.
Does the injection hurt?
Most people feel only brief discomfort. A local anaesthetic is often used to numb the area, and the injection itself takes just a few minutes.
How long does the relief last?
It varies. Many patients feel the benefit for several weeks to a few months. Some experience longer relief, others less - your doctor will discuss what to expect in your case.
Will it cure my arthritis or tendinitis?
No. A steroid injection relieves symptoms rather than curing the underlying condition. It works best alongside staying active, physiotherapy and the other measures your doctor recommends.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Steroid injections are generally safe. Possible effects include a short-lived flare of pain, temporary changes to skin colour or thinning at the site, and, rarely, infection. There is also a limit to how often injections should be given. Your doctor will explain the risks fully before you decide.
