What is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy uses extreme cold - liquid nitrogen - to freeze and destroy unwanted skin lesions. It is a quick, well-established treatment for warts, verrucae, skin tags and a range of other benign skin growths. The freezing damages the targeted tissue, which then heals and clears over the following days to weeks.

Treatment is carried out in the clinic by a doctor and usually takes only a few minutes. An anaesthetic is not normally needed. Stubborn lesions, particularly warts and verrucae, usually need multiple sessions; some patients need 5 or 6 or more. Before treating anything, a doctor examines the lesion to confirm it is benign and suitable - we will never freeze a lesion that needs further assessment.

Quick, safe and straightforward

Because cryotherapy is provided by certain doctors, it is not directly bookable. You are first seen for a consultation to confirm the lesion is suitable, and your treatment is then arranged with a doctor who provides it.

1

Assessment

A doctor examines the lesion to confirm it is benign and suitable for cryotherapy, and answers your questions.

2

Freezing treatment

Liquid nitrogen is applied to the lesion for a few seconds. You may feel a brief sting or burning sensation.

3

Healing

The area may blister and scab, then the lesion clears over the following days to weeks. We give you simple aftercare advice.

4

Review & repeat

Stubborn warts and verrucae usually need multiple sessions, 10 days to 2 weeks apart; some patients need 5 or 6 or more. We review and re-treat as needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book cryotherapy directly?
No. Cryotherapy is provided by certain doctors, so you are first seen for a consultation to confirm the lesion is suitable. Your treatment is then arranged with a doctor who provides it.
Does it hurt?
You may feel a brief stinging or burning sensation for a few seconds while the lesion is frozen. It is usually well tolerated and an anaesthetic is not normally needed.
How many sessions will I need?
Small lesions and skin tags are often cleared in one session. Warts and verrucae are more stubborn and usually need multiple sessions; some patients need 5 or 6 or more.
Will it leave a scar?
The area usually heals well. Temporary blistering, redness or a lighter or darker mark on the skin can occur, but permanent scarring is uncommon.
What can be treated with cryotherapy?
Warts, verrucae, skin tags and certain other benign lesions such as some sun spots and molluscum. A doctor will confirm what is suitable at your appointment.
Is there anything you will not treat?
Yes. We will not freeze any lesion that looks suspicious or needs further assessment. If that is the case we will explain the right next step for you - this is the safe and responsible approach.
