What is the Flu vaccine?

The annual flu vaccine provides protection against the influenza strains predicted by the WHO to circulate each winter season, and its composition is updated each year. For the 2026/27 season the vaccines are trivalent. One strain, B/Yamagata, has not been found circulating naturally since 2020, so it is no longer included: the vaccines protect against the three strains expected to circulate (two influenza A and one influenza B), which does not mean less protection. We offer the cell-based inactivated influenza vaccine (IIVc) from 6 months to 64 years, and the adjuvanted inactivated influenza vaccine (aIIV), given routinely from age 65 and from age 50 on request. The cell-based vaccine is egg-free, so it is the one we use for anyone with an egg allergy. The NHS-only nasal spray (LAIV) is not offered at HHCC - please attend the NHS for that. Flu can be a serious illness, especially in older adults, those with long-term conditions and during pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to get the flu vaccine?
Flu vaccinations are available at HHCC now for adults and children from 6 months of age. Current advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which advises the UK Government on vaccination, recommends vaccination from September for children and pregnant women, with most adults advised to have their flu vaccination from 1 October. This is because protection can reduce over time, and later vaccination helps maintain protection during the period when flu is most likely to circulate. At HHCC, as a private provider, we are making flu vaccination available from now to those who wish to be vaccinated earlier. For those for whom vaccination from 1 October is generally recommended, we will be happy to advise on the most appropriate timing based on individual circumstances.
Is the flu vaccine the same every year?
The strains covered change each year based on WHO surveillance. You need a new jab every year - previous year's vaccine does not carry forward.
Can I get the flu vaccine if I'm pregnant?
Yes - flu vaccination is strongly recommended in pregnancy. It protects both mother and baby during the vulnerable first weeks of life.
What are the side effects?
Most common: mild arm soreness for 1–2 days. A low-grade temperature and feeling slightly 'off' for 24 hours is normal. The vaccine cannot give you flu - it is inactivated.
