What is the Chickenpox vaccine?

The chickenpox vaccine (Varivax) is a live attenuated varicella vaccine given as two doses, 4–8 weeks apart. Since January 2026 chickenpox has been part of the NHS childhood schedule, given as the combined MMRV vaccine at 1 year and 18 months, and at the pre-school booster for children born before 2025. We offer the single chickenpox vaccine to older children, teenagers and adults who have never had chickenpox or the vaccine, and we can follow the US schedule for families who have moved from the US. Chickenpox in adults is significantly more severe than in children - vaccination prevents the illness and also reduces the risk of shingles in later life.

Recommended for…

Older children outside the NHS programme, children on the US schedule, unvaccinated adolescents and adults who haven't had chickenpox, and healthcare workers.

✓

Children outside the NHS programme

The NHS now gives young children chickenpox protection in the MMRV vaccine. Older children who missed out, and families following the US schedule, can have it privately with us.

✓

Unvaccinated adults

Chickenpox in adults causes more severe illness - pneumonia, encephalitis and hospitalisation are significantly more common.

✓

Healthcare workers

Healthcare workers who haven't had chickenpox must be vaccinated before patient contact to protect immunocompromised patients.

Frequently asked questions

How many doses does my child need?
Two doses are needed, given 4–8 weeks apart. Both doses are required for optimal (~98%) protection. A single dose provides around 85% protection against any chickenpox and close to 100% protection against severe disease.
Can adults have the chickenpox vaccine?
Yes - adults without prior chickenpox or vaccination can receive two doses. The illness is considerably more severe in adults.
Can my child have the vaccine at the same time as other vaccinations?
Yes - the chickenpox vaccine can be given simultaneously with most other vaccines. Your nurse will advise on the same day.
What are the side effects?
Most common: mild soreness and redness at the injection site, and in around 5% of children a mild chickenpox-like rash 1–3 weeks after vaccination.
