Why microsuction?

Microsuction uses a fine, low-pressure suction probe to remove ear wax under direct visualisation - no water, no pressure on the eardrum, no mess. It is the method recommended by ENT specialists worldwide, and the only technique we use at HHCC. Traditional ear syringing and irrigation flush water into the ear canal under pressure, which can cause perforation, infection, and vertigo. With microsuction, the clinician sees everything on a video screen throughout - there are no blind spots and no surprises. The procedure typically takes 5–10 minutes per ear, with no preparation or downtime required.

Where we are

Ear wax removal is carried out at The Clementine Churchill Hospital on Sudbury Hill, Harrow, in our first-floor clinic. There is step-free access with lifts, and free parking for patients. As well as Harrow, we see patients from Wealdstone, Kenton, South Harrow, Pinner, Hatch End and Greenford.

If your hearing is still muffled once the wax is out, or you have ear pain or discharge, one of our private GPs can see you, usually the same day. Ear wax removal is also offered as part of a full health assessment, where it can be done before the hearing test.

Common questions about ear microsuction

How often can you have it done?
It varies from patient to patient. Some people produce a lot of ear wax and get blockages as often as every 3 to 6 months, and may need microsuction every 4 to 6 months. Unlike ear syringing - where water flushed into the ear has to hit the sensitive canal and eardrum, which then need time to recover - microsuction lets us latch onto and remove the wax (or simply suck up very soft wax), so it can be carried out as often as necessary. We also use microsuction to treat outer ear infections, removing debris or pus from the canal so that antibiotic drops can work more effectively.
Is any prep required?
Softening the wax beforehand is not essential, but using olive oil drops to soften it can make the procedure faster and more comfortable. We suggest 2 to 3 days of olive oil soaks at night before your appointment - olive oil only, not sodium bicarbonate or Otex.
Is it safe for children?
Children over 4 to 5 years old can have microsuction, but whether a child tolerates the procedure and stays still is not within our control. You will still be charged for the appointment even if we are unable to perform it - usually this means a longer appointment while we try, and possibly a referral to ENT to perform under anaesthesia if appropriate (for example, for foreign bodies).
Can it be done after ear surgery?
Yes - microsuction is well suited and highly recommended for patients who have had ear surgery in the past, such as mastoidectomy, eardrum repair, grommet insertion, stapedectomy, and refashioning of the ear canal.
Can it be done with a perforated eardrum?
Yes - microsuction is the safest method of cleaning the ears if you have a perforated eardrum. Patients with a perforated eardrum must not have their ears irrigated with water or syringed.
Can I fly afterwards?
Yes - you can travel by plane after ear microsuction, unless you have been advised not to fly for other medical reasons.
How much does ear wax removal cost?
£65 with our nurse and £100 with a doctor, whether one ear or both are treated. The price covers the examination with the ENT microscope, the microsuction and aftercare advice. Online booking is for the nurse appointment; to see a doctor, please call 020 8861 1221.
Is ear wax removal available on the NHS?
Generally not. Most NHS GP surgeries no longer offer it, and a hospital referral for microsuction can take a year or more. Here you do not need a referral, and we can usually see you the same day if you call before noon.
How do I know if my ears are blocked with wax?
The usual signs are muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, earache, itching or ringing in the ear. At your appointment we look into the ear with the microscope first, to confirm that wax is the cause before removing it.
