Three lesser-known symptoms of the menopause

The majority of women in the UK are likely to be fully aware of the typical, most common symptoms of going through the menopause – which can range from hot sweats and flushes to mood swings and anxiety.

However, there are a number of other key symptoms which are perhaps lesser-known, and it is important to remember that the menopause is likely to affect different bodies in a variety of different ways.

Here are a handful of symptoms to watch out for:

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary Tract Infections or ‘UTIs’ can become more frequent in women who are going through the menopause. This is largely due to falling oestrogen levels, which can have a knock-on effect on the pH balance in the vagina.

Changes in muscle mass

Again, lower levels of oestrogen can cause problems here, too. Women can experience reduced muscle mass if they do not make an effort to eat a well-balanced diet and to exercise regularly.

Sleep disturbance

Women going through the menopause very often encounter disrupted sleep. This is due in part to vasomotor symptoms, but is also influenced by menopausal hormone changes.

At The Harrow Healthcare Centre, we regularly support patients with menopause-related care and advice.

Dr Jane Woyka runs the London Menopause Clinic and is widely experienced in working with patients who have experienced premature menopause, as well as in dealing with patients whose cancer history might exclude them from traditional hormonal therapies.
