Covid-19 antibody testing: what you need to know

Harrow Health Care Centre is now able to offer a variety of Covid-19 antibody tests.

When the body has been infected by the coronavirus, the immune system produces detectable antibodies to fight off infection.

Antibody testing can detect that a person has been infected previously or has a vaccine-induced immune response .

The vaccines in the UK are all directed at the spike protein, so the antibodies generated are to the spike only

What types of tests are available?

There are currently four types of antibody testing available. These include:

  • Roche Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S (Spike) IgG/IgM Total Antibody:  SCOV

For patients who have had at least one coronavirus vaccination and would like to know their antibody response.

  • Roche Elecys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM Total Antibody:   TCOV

For patients who have had or believe they had Covid-19 at least  21 or more days ago.

  • Abbott Architect SARS-CoV-2 IgG:  GCOV

An alternative antibody test for patients who  had or believe they had Covid-19  at least 21 or more days ago.

  • Abbott Architect SARS-CoV-2 IgM: MCOV

For international travel to exclude acute infection (for example, China and south east Asia).

More information about each of these tests can be found on our private Covid-19 testing page here.

When should you get an antibody test?

Antibody testing should be undertaken 21 days or more following exposure or  post vaccination.
