The UK is suffering from an obesity epidemic, with recent official data suggesting that obesity levels have increased from just 15 per cent to 26 per cent since 1993.
More and more people are struggling with their weight, with those aged between 45 and 74 the most likely to be affected by obesity, and men typically more likely to have an ‘above average’ Body Mass Index (BMI) than women.
The BMI is the most widely used measure of obesity across the UK – and can be calculated by dividing a person’s weight by the square of their height (kg/m²).
People with a normal weight will usually have a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9, while those considered to be ‘obese’ will have a BMI of 30 or more. People with a BMI of 40 or more are often described as suffering from ‘morbid obesity’.
It is important to ensure that your BMI is checked regularly and that any concerns regarding obesity are explored sooner rather than later.
