Meningitis B (MenB) Vaccination

30 April 2026

Recent updates

At The Harrow Health Care Centre, we now have meningococcal B (MenB) vaccines available.

Recent cases of meningococcal infection have been reported in the south of England, initially in Kent and more recently in Dorset, primarily affecting younger individuals.

These cases are not directly linked and remain uncommon. However, they serve as a useful reminder of the importance of ensuring vaccinations are up to date, particularly in children, teenagers and young adults.

What is MenB?

Meningitis B (MenB) is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B. It can lead to meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and, in some cases, bloodstream infection.

MenB infection is rare, but it can become serious if it occurs. It is most commonly seen in babies and young children, although teenagers and young adults are also at increased risk.

How is MenB spread?

MenB is spread through close personal contact and respiratory droplets, including:

This is why infection is more commonly seen in teenagers and young adults, particularly those in school, university, or shared living environments.

Why consider vaccination?

The MenB vaccine helps protect against meningococcal group B infection and significantly reduces the risk of severe illness.

In the UK, the vaccine was introduced into the routine childhood programme in 2015. This means that:

For these groups, vaccination can provide additional protection and peace of mind.

Other vaccines that help protect against meningitis

Meningitis can be caused by different types of bacteria, including meningococcal and pneumococcal strains (both common causes of serious infection).

Depending on age and individual circumstances, protection may also include:

Our clinical team can advise on whether these are appropriate as part of a broader vaccination review.

At The Harrow Health Care Centre, we offer two UK-licensed MenB vaccines:

Both vaccines are safe and effective. Our clinical team will recommend the most appropriate option based on age and medical history.
